Norbert’s East Dulwich: A Rotisserie Revelation
We've often said London falls short when it comes to proper rotisserie chicken; especially when you compare it to France. But Norbert’s in East Dulwich might just be the answer we’ve been waiting for. Rotisserie chicken is one of Zaeem’s favourite dishes, so he was thrilled to hear a spot like this was opening right in our neighbourhood, just over a week ago!
Oh hello!
This new opening is the brainchild of restaurateur John Ogier (of Lyle’s and The Marksman, to name a few), whose partner owns the much-loved Eric’s Bakery just up the road (what a dream team, eh) and Jack Coghlan (from Lyles and Planque).
Norbert’s is a small spot, with just 16 seats inside, giving it a lively, local feel that hits you as soon as you walk through the door. Add to that a great playlist and a playful cocktail menu — including a piña colada (yes, really); and it instantly feels like somewhere you’ll want to return to. There are also two tables out front for those warmer evenings that are within reach.
To start, order one of their mini cocktails. The Mini Margarita, with its chicken salt rim, is clever and surprisingly delicious; a fun way to set the tone. If you’re feeling brave with your cocktail choice, there’s The Craig David, though we’ll let you discover that one for yourself.
The star, of course, is the rotisserie chicken: perfectly cooked, juicy, and packed with flavour. The chicken juices are so good you almost don’t need the sauces on the side (but they’re equally delicious and not to be missed). If we were being extra picky, we’d say the skin could have been a touch crispier.. but the chicken was so tender we’re not complaining.
Mini margarita time
We tried both the pepper butter and gravy sauces, both were exceptional. You’ll want to mop every last drop up (which we did by ordering some extra fries at the end and mixing them in with the juices/ sauce).
The chicken fat potatoes were cooked beautifully, golden and tender, and the green salad was light, fresh, and properly dressed.
To finish: a rich, indulgent hazelnut chocolate mousse that sealed the deal. Served with orange slices to cut the richness - yum!
John was on hand throughout, keeping a watchful eye over the space, fun and friendly and his staff were warm and attentive. All in all, Norbert’s delivers what London’s been missing: seriously good rotisserie chicken in an elevated but unfussy setting.
Drinks whilst you wait
One thing to note — Norbert’s doesn’t take bookings, so you might need to wait for a table. But don’t let that put you off. If there’s a queue, head next door to Drop Dulwich for a glass of wine while you wait. It’s a relaxed little wine bar and the perfect place to sip something good before settling in for your chicken feast.
We already can’t wait to return to have more juicy chicken and try out all their side offerings, cocktails and cheese!
