Dough Hands, London
Our Rating: ★★★ | ££££ - Great tasting London-style pizza, worth the hype (How we rate restaurants)
If you love good pizza and a good story, make sure you check out Dough Hands. Run by chef Hannah Drye, this pizza mission has grown from her uni days slinging dough to full-on residencies in two of London’s friendliest pubs: the Spurstowe Arms in Hackney and The Old Nun’s Head in Nunhead, where we stopped by on a sunny afternoon.
The Jode
The vibe
The Old Nun’s Head was buzzing when we arrived. It’s a classic South London boozer with a lively outdoor space and plenty of locals enjoying the weather. It took a bit of shuffling, but we managed to squeeze onto a bench outside and dug straight in, pizza balanced on our laps.
The pizza
‘London style’ crispy pizza
We shared the Jode pizza (‘Nduja, hot Honey and stracciatella) (Having just been to Calabria ourselves, we couldn’t resist).
The base was crispy yet light, the tomato sauce was full of flavour without being overly rich, but the ‘Nduja itself didn’t quite pack the punch we were hoping for.
Dough Hands do offer a veggie alternative to the ‘Nduja if you want (we split our pizza with half of the veggie stuff and half of the real stuff).
What stole the show, though, was the hot sauce dip. It’s Hannah’s own “Hackney Hotty” and it’s brilliant. Tangy, punchy, and perfect for crust-dipping. (You can even buy a bottle online if you get hooked.)
Final word
Hannah clearly cares about what she’s serving, and it shows. It’s no wonder she’s earned two permanent spots. It’s the perfect place to grab some friends, a drink and tuck in to some deliciously crispy London pizza.
