Mallorca

Mallorca is one of the most popular destinations in Europe for tourists looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Located off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea, this beautiful island is full of stunning landscapes, delicious food, and plenty of adventure activities for visitors.

Mallorca Guides

We spent 10 days on the Island, and It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with it.

The first few days, we stayed in a traditional Finca on the east coast, exploring the beaches, chilling in the pool and cooking a BBQ each night. The second half of the trip was spent in a small hotel on the west coast, exploring the nearby towns. We rented a car which we think is the best way to get around the Island with complete freedom.

Palma is the capital and the most talked about city but we didn’t spend much time there at all, our trip was more about getting on the road and exploring the more rural side of the island.

Our Mallorca Highlights

Staying in a Finca (Farmhouse)

These properties were originally built as working farms, retaining much of the feel of Mallorca’s agricultural roots. You’ll be able to get a more casual glimpse at local life, as well as enjoy delicious meals and produce made with ingredients straight from the farm.

We stayed at Sa Plana Nova, just outside Felix, and it was the perfect base for exploring the beaches on the east coast. The rooms were spacious, the hosts were lovely, and we had a nice pool, kitchen and BBQ to enjoy whenever we wanted. (Fresh Sea Bream and Gambas from the local store 👌).

Chilling on the beaches

The water is crystal clear and the beaches are a mixture of rocky bays and sandy coves. We found that the east coast had the better sandy beaches, whereas, on the west, the beaches were rockier or a bit more touristy.

On the East of the Island:

  • Cala Romantica (Quiet, spacious, with a lovely bar in the middle)

  • Cala Llombards (Insta snaps)

  • Cala D’or (Small but beautiful with cliffs to jump from)

  • Cala Gran

On the West of the island:

  • Sant Elms (Seafood restaurants)

  • Camp del Mar (Watersports and restaurant Ileta)

  • Playa del Palma (Large space and next to the airport)

Exploring the local towns

  • Santanyi - Amazing market, cafés and homeware stores (Terra Origens)

  • Felantix, Andraxt - Sleepy local towns worth a drive through especially if you like photography and quiet local streets

  • Valdemossa - A picturesque hillside town, worth a coffee stop when exploring the west coast

  • Deia - Beautiful scenary and slightly pretentious. Best place to stay in a fancy villa.

  • Banyalbufar - It’s a tiny place with a few cafes and restaurants but the views of sunset from the cliffs are absolutely stunning!

  • Port Andraxt - Fancy port town with nice restaurants and yachts

  • Port Soller - Port town with lots of seafood restaurants

Feasting from the Med

The Spanish don’t hold back on their food and with it being an island, seafood is of course the hype here. During our time in the finca, we would buy fresh steak, fish and gambas from the local supermarket and grill them on the barbecue along side some sides and salads. For lunches we would snack from a beachside café or from a market in the towns.

  • Terra Origens (Santnyi) for brunch

  • Restaurant Ileta (Camp del Mar) for lunch/dinner in the middle of the sea

  • Cas Patro March (Deia) for a cliffside seafood meal. Known for its role in the Night Manager.

  • El Camino (Palma) for an upscale Tapas dinner

Sant Elms had a lot of nice looking seafood restaurants by the beach and Port Soller’s harbour is also lined with many seafood places as well.

Driving along the Serra de Tramuntana

The Serra de Tramuntana is a mountain range located in the northwestern part of Majorca. It’s known for its dramatic scenery that attracts hikers, climbers, and cyclists from all over the world. Driving along the MA-10 you’ll find many stunning viewpoints and several beautiful Majorcan towns. The road is very windy but it’s wide and well-paved enough to drive comfortably.

  • Sunsets - You’ll find several viewpoints to watch the sunset over the horizon

  • Beautiful towns - Andraxt, Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Valldemossa, Deia, Soller are all along the MA-10

  • Running - There is plenty of space on the side of the roads to go for a run with beautiful scenery

Getting active

Mallorca is one of the only holidays where we ate well and came home feeling lighter than before … really! The scenery, mountains and coastline are perfect for getting active with lots of different activities available.

  • Snorkling - Most of the beaches have shops to rent snorkle gear from

  • Watersports - Padleboarding, jet-skiing … all the usual beach sports are available at the bigger beaches

  • Running

Our Mallorca Top Tips

Rent a car

If you stay in Palma you can get buses and train to most of the popular places around the Island easily but renting a car opens you up to so many more opportunities! The roads in Mallorca are very well kept so it’s easy to drive around.

Food portions are huge

The portion sizes in Mallorca are huge. Starters on the menu are not cheap but they serve 2/3 people so be careful not to over order.

Book ahead

Mallorca is a popular place so if you want to eat at the best spots make sure you book ahead. Especially for places like El Camino and Cas Patro March

Getting down to Ca’s Patro March

It takes a while to get down from Deia to the beach (Cala Deia) and the road is extremely narrow and windy. Avoid driving if you can otherwise you’ll get stuck taking abuse from the local taxi drivers.

Deia beach is small, crowded and not worth it

If you’re staying in Deia, unless your eating at the restaurants, don’t bother making the long journey to cala Deia
