Sunday Roast at The Laundry - Brixton, London
Our Rating: ★★★ | ££££ | £60pp - A good Sunday roast in a lovely rustic bistro (How we rate restaurants)
Sunday roasts are a risky one.
At home, they’re hard to beat. So when you go out for one, it either needs to be exceptional or spot-on. Somewhere in between can feel… unnecessary.
We headed to The Laundry in Brixton, a spot known locally for its Sunday lunches, to see where it lands.
Set just off Coldharbour Lane, the space itself is a big part of the appeal. We sat upstairs in the dining room, which is light, airy and rustic without trying too hard. It has that relaxed, neighbourhood bistro feel that makes you want to settle in for a long lunch.
The menu keeps things simple with three roast options:
Beetroot skewer
Sirloin beef
Pork
There’s also a specials board which, on our visit, included confit duck.
The standout concept here is the unlimited roast veg and gravy, and yes, that includes the roast potatoes. A genuinely great idea, especially when the roasties are as good as they are here. Crisp on the outside, fluffy in the middle, and very easy to keep going back for.
The Food
We went for the sirloin beef (three portions between us).
Overall, it was a solid roast. The beef was cooked perfectly, tender and full of flavour. The vegetables were well done, and everything on the plate felt considered. There was also a really good horseradish sauce that tied the dish together nicely.
But this is where it gets slightly frustrating.
The Yorkshire puddings were just… fine. Not bad, but not memorable either. And when you’re doing a Sunday roast, those details matter.
More importantly, the gravy let the whole thing down. It was thin, watery, and lacked that deep, rich flavour you want soaking into everything on the plate.
Sides & Desserts
We added a Mac ‘n’ cheese to share, which was good, exactly what you’d expect and no complaints there.
For dessert, we shared a cookie with vanilla ice cream from the specials board and had two affogatos.
The cookie was enjoyable but again, nothing particularly stood out. The affogato, however, was excellent. Simple, but done very well.
The Verdict
With mains, a bottle of wine between three, dessert, affogatos and service, we paid around £60 per person.
The Laundry delivers a good, reliable Sunday roast in a great setting, with a few strong touches like the unlimited roasties and well-cooked meat. But it stops short of being somewhere you’d travel across London for.
If you live nearby, it’s absolutely worth having in your rotation. If not, you might be looking for something a bit more special.
That said, we’d happily come back, if not for the roast, then to explore the rest of the menu.
