Best Restaurants in Puerto Escondido, Mexico

Puerto Escondido might be best known for its barrel waves, golden beaches, and laid-back surf culture rather than its food. But the international mix of people who now call it home has brought a surprisingly rich dining scene, with everything from fantastic Mexican cooking to flavours from around the world.

Fish Shack, La Punta

We arrived with pretty low expectations of the food. We had heard it was touristy, with no authentic Mexican flair… and while that’s partly true, we ended up leaving genuinely impressed by what Puerto had to offer.

It doesn’t have the same quintessential Mexican feel as Oaxaca or Mexico City. This is, after all, a surf town filled with global visitors, remote workers, and ‘expats’. Yes, there are plenty of tourist-friendly and party-oriented spots, but the food can still be absolutely brilliant.

Here’s a round-up of our favourite places to eat in Puerto Escondido, along with a few more that came highly recommended to us.

Chicama

Ceviche and Tuna Tataki at Chicama

Chicama is a restaurant that we still talk about to this day, 2 years later!

The Peruvian dishes, lively Cumbian music (with waiters occasionally joining in with their instruments), and sandy floor create a fun, yet relaxed experience.

The ceviche was the standout dish for us, but everything we had was incredible. Given its popularity, you might encounter a queue, but it’s worth the Mexico. If you’re only in town for a short visit, we’d recommend trying to go at the beginning of your trip.

We enjoyed the music so much that we asked for the playlist, which became our soundtrack for the rest of our travels in Mexico.

Fish Shack La Punta

Pescado Frito Coco (coconut fried fish) - Incredible!

Tucked down a sandy alley leading directly to the beach, Fish Shack is the perfect spot for fresh seafood tacos and mezcal.

We absolutely loved their coconut fried fish tacos (pescado frito coco).

Note that it's closed on Mondays and open until 11 pm.

Atarraya

This open-air, candlelit restaurant is just a few streets off the main strip in La Punta. It’s ideal if you fancy dressing up and enjoying a cocktail in the evening.

We recommend the battered fish taco and the Mahi Mahi.

There’s live music on Wednesdays, and they occasionally host salsa classes.

One thing to note, at first, it might seem like you've taken a wrong turn, but it’s just located on a quiet street.

La Casa del Surfer

Mahi Mahi on the grill

Imagine hearing the beach waves crashing nearby while passing freshly grilled Mahi Mahi fish (also known as dolphin fish) in front of your eyes. That was our welcome as we walked towards the beach. We weren’t intending on eating, but we saw the fish being barbecued and just had to stop and order some of it.

Sit out front, savour a Mahi Mahi fish taco, and try one of their huge smoothies.

El Sultan

If you find yourself uptown in Rinconada or just passing by, stop here for a falafel wrap. We would come here regularly before our surf lessons in Playa Carrizalillo.

(When we updated this blog post in 2025, we realised this may not be closed down. Please do let us know if that’s the case in the comments below.

Dulce Tierra Bakery & Coffee

For those mornings when you crave something sweet or a pastry, make sure to visit this artisan bakery for a coffee. You'll find a few locations, including La Punta, Zicatela, and Rinconada.

Espacio Cometa La Punta

Pad Thai from the market

We stumbled upon this charming food market in La Punta offering an array of dishes, including Thai food, crepes, sushi, burgers and more.

It's located opposite a place known as ‘Food Market La Punta,’ so don’t be fooled.

The one we’re recommending features wicker basket lighting and sandy floors, creating the perfect atmosphere for a casual and affordable dinner. The seating is comfortable, and there's a variety of drinks available from the bar at the back.

They occasionally host DJ sets and game nights too, so keep an eye on their Instagram for upcoming events: @espacio_cometa
